Course Description: Fears that the SARS-CoV-2 virus can spread through aerosol transmission have led to world-wide closure of dental offices. In the United States, as we begin to re-open our offices to our patients, we are aware that we do not return to a COVID-free world, but to one where we will be treating potential carriers and asymptomatic transmitters. We have received guidance and guidelines on reducing aerosols at source and mitigating transmission of infective agents from several groups. These guidelines vary widely, and yet all of them recommend that dental practitioners use professional judgment in assessing risk within their office environment and employ these guidelines accordingly.
In this 2-hour webinar, AAP officers Drs. Bryan Frantz, Chris Richardson, and James Wilson will discuss strategies they have employed in their practices for risk mitigation. They will be joined by Dr. Purnima Kumar, Chair of CEOC, who will critically examine the evidence on microbial payload in dental aerosols, methods of reducing bioload at source, mitigating aerosol spread, and decreasing microbial contamination. Originally broadcast on Friday, May 15, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. CT.
· Examine the evidence on the source of microbiota in dental offices.
· Consider the science behind herd immunity and how it impacts the future of periodontal practice.
· Examine the evidence that supports the use of several aerosol reduction and mitigation methods.
· Review the science behind selecting the appropriate PPE based on level the risk.
